Child - Friendly Dentistry – Modern Solutions.
-
Dr. Antonio Pedro SilvaAbout the speaker
The lecture demonstrates how combining a child-friendly approach with modern technologies improves the experience of children and their parents.
Topics discussed:
- Contemporary behaviour management methods: how dental visits are perceived by children and parents, and how this influences clinical strategies.
- Behavioural tools and new technologies – the role of “Roogies”: digital or virtual educational tools supporting a child’s adaptation to the dental visit.

Token Board – A Useful Tool in the Paediatric Dentist’s Office.
-
Lek. dent. Maciej BodalAbout the speaker
- Introduction
- In paediatric dentistry, the ability to control and shape a child’s behaviour in stressful situations is essential.
- One of the most effective tools is the token board, a simplified form of a token economy.
- This tool helps increase motivation, reduce anxiety, and improve cooperation with the patient.
- Origins of the Method – From Skinner to Modern ABA
- The principles of token economy stem from research by B.F. Skinner (1930s–1950s), who demonstrated that reinforced behaviours occur more frequently.
- It was observed that rewards can be delivered indirectly, through secondary reinforcement (tokens).
- In the 1960s, Ayllon and Azrin developed pioneering token economy programmes in psychiatry—patients earned tokens for desired behaviours and exchanged them for privileges.
- This model became the foundation for the development of Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA), which since the 1960s–70s has used token systems with children with ASD, developmental disorders, and in education.
- ABA as the Basis for Modern Behaviour-Support Tools
ABA assumes that: - Reinforced behaviours occur more often,
- Non-reinforced behaviours extinguish,
- Behavioural change should generalise to new situations.
In paediatric dentistry, ABA has been adapted as a methodology supporting cooperation with patients, particularly anxious or challenging ones.
